Outlines of Two Articles:
The Skinny on Model
Paragraph 1 : A brazilian Model, looked in control and poised on set and in front of the camera, but be hide she was a wreck only eating tomatoes and apples. A 5’10 88 pound 24-year-old model died because of anorexia. She had a 13. 4 BMI.
Paragraph 2: Madrid Fashion week officials banned models with BMI’s under 18. Along with that many other fashion leaders are making changes to the model weight guidelines.
Paragraph 3: People saying that it’s a great idea to ban Ultrathin super models because its gives teens and unrealistic and unhealthy body standards that can later lead to and eating disorder of some type.
Paragraph 4: Many people applaud the idea of moving away from ultrathin fashion models because the thin and sexy look made many women and girls dislike their own bodies.
Paragraph 5: Many people celebrated the fact that Madrid did the guideline to have a BMI higher than 18, specially because models are held up to be “perfect” and not everyone can be perfect.
Paragraph 6: States that the fashion industry and models are not to be blamed for eating disorders. Stating the biggest problem in America is obesity. Stating in reality there are more obese teens then there ever was before. Ford modeling agency states that obesity and anerxia are the biggest problems but they both stem from various things, and it’s not all the fashion industries fault.
The Effects Media Has on Teenagers Body Image:
Paragraph 1: Being worshipped for Beauty is more important than scholarship or being true to ones self.
Paragraph 2: Wanting to be like the old Hollywood Glamour or skinny Pin up girls. Girls believe that key to success is looking good on the outside. All in style magazines like elle are featuring young beautiful movies stars which normal girls strive to be like.
Paragraph 3: Jennifer Love-Hewitt was photographed in a bikini and was harassed for not having a flat stomach. Jenn is a size 2, which is very smaller and not even close to the size 16 which is an average size for the American women. Jenn unlike most celebrities strive for teens to be comfortable in their own skin, even mentioning it on her webpage.
Paragraph 4: Bulimia and Anorxia has taken over younger people for decades, Most don’t understand the risk that follow this disease. Hair and tooth loss, cancer of the stomach and even death. The desire for the perfect body is so stong they would give up their health in order to fit into a size 0 which is said to be beautiful. Another thing that is popular with teens are fad diets like, skipping meals, Binge eating etc. But these diets can stunt your growth if started at a young enough age and also harm your immune system.
Paragraph 5: Today the effect media has on teenagers body image is mostly NEGATIVE. The fashion world is finally waking up and seeing that being super skinny is not that sexy and there are guidelines being made for models. Also celebrities are starting to look more like real people like America Ferrera, who is a heavier set actress.
What is the difference between the introduction and the lit review? In what ways did the authors attempt to hook the reader’s interest? What are the a) purpose/objective, b) significance/importance, c) main research question, d) methods, e) results, and f) final conclusions/recommendations for future research and where in your outlines from item 1 above can each of these be found?
For both of my articles they only had Introductions, my second article i found it interesting and actually caught my eye at the end of the introduction that it said “Being worshipped for Beauty is more important than scholarship or being true to ones self.” Which really made me want to read more about that because I find that statement to be true, Which is why I’m writing this paper because it shouldn’t be that way. For my other article though the title is what really caught my eye, ” The Skinny on Model” this caught my eye just because it sounds like they are about to dis dirt on models and how many of them have eating disorders. Also the introduction to this article talks about a model that went to far with her eating disorder an actually died from it at 24 years old.
For my first article the author I believe attempted to catch the reader’s eye with his title, since that is how the author caught my eye. But than once i started reading it the author kept me interested with the introduction and the death of the super model. I think that the objective for making the first paragraph about death was to let the reader know this is a serious topic and things like this do happen. It is important to start off with seriousness when talking about such a widely discussed topic because it shows the author did their research and actually found a models story to tell. This articles main research question is set more as a debate on whether or not models should have a limit on their weight, and how the fashion industry feel about that topic. They article did interviews with many people for their information, I believe this whole article may be interview with the author just filling in the gaps. The results that were found from this is that fashion leaders are starting to put weight constraints on their models, and how modeling agencies don’t agree with that. Everything that I’ve posted from above in my outline I believe are all the above question each paragraph will describe those questions.
I felt that authors attempted to hook the reader’s interest with facts for my second article, even though is may not be a known fact anyone that reads that will know that it’s true for many girls or boys. In my article it also showed a picture of a very skinny, Boney model modeling a binki, which really caught my eye since my research is on and about the fashion industry and the effects pictures like that have on teens. The purpose for my second article i felt was to give more knowledge about the effects the media has on teenage bodies, and how many teenagers don’t see anything wrong with wanting to be thin, because thin is was is in and what is beautiful. I believe it was very important for this article to have a picture along with it because it showed what type of things teens are looking at. This authors main research question was to find the effects media has on a teenagers body, and to explain some with detail and a solution to solve those problems. Their method was i believe internet based, with outside world help. I believe that because they added in a story about Jennifer Love- Hewitt and how she dealt with being called fat or not perfect.

Introduction:
The first article about introductory paragraph mentioned great ways to starting out your research paper. The first thing it mentioned was first impressions are major, specially with writing if your first sentence doesn’t catch the eye of your reader they will not stay interested and will stop reading it. So it is best to have a first sentence that really catches the reader’s attention. This article mentioned starting your introduction off with an interesting fact or even quote from someone famous that goes along with what you are researching. It also said your introduction could start out with humor or even a surprising fact, really anything that is interesting and well spark the readers interest.
My next article titled, how to write and introduction- introducing the research paper, gave a more broad overview of how to start with more examples. Some examples were thinking of your introduction as an inverted pyramid, a wide overview which then will lead into your thesis statement. It stated that some scientist and researchers chose to write their introduction last so that they can make sure they don’t miss anything. Also stating that your introduction should explain how the writer is going to go about solving his or her research problem. This article stated that the introduction is the best place to highlight any weaknesses in the experiments, the writer should also add in any assumptions he or she may have. Lastly this article gives three types for writing an introduction which are keeping it short, defining the problem and keeping everything organized.
Shuttleworth, Martyn. “How to write an Introduction”. Experiment-Resources.com. February 16, 2010 <http://www.experiment-resources.com/how-to-write-an-introduction.html>.
I think both of these websites really helped me out with knowing how to start my introduction. The first article really showed me that i can have really anything to start out with as long as its interesting and is connected to my topic in someway. The second article then showed me how i can start writing it like the inverted pyramid example, also stating that i need to state my problem some where in the introduction so my readers can tell what i am researching. I think the most important thing about an introduction is to catch the reader because I know that I won’t read something if I don’t find the first sentence let alone the first paragraph interesting.

Evaluating a source:
Some skills I’ve learned from the two articles I read were very helpful, they mostly had the same information. The first article that was given to us i felt gave a more broad spectrum, not just focusing on one thing. My next article which had the same information but went more towards things being bias and even had a little section on evaluating bias, which is very important when writing a research paper because you don’t want to favor one subject. One thing that they both did have in common was their basic criteria for evaluating a source, which were checking out the author, publisher and title. Find out if the author is creditable, look at other work he or she did, even ask your professor if they’ve ever heard of them before. Find the publisher and take note to where it was published if it is by a university press that usually means it is scholarly, also take note if they are reputable. Lastly look at the title, does it even come close to your topic? Now knowing how to check sources better I will be able to find good sources faster instead of wasting my time with pointless sources, also I know now that I should really look for bias in my sources because that can really influence me to write my paper in a different way then i planned.
Three Sources:
My first source is about depression and how the media is involved with that, there is also a study done in this research with adolescents with major depression disorder. This Article was done fairly recent and also the information as of where they found a lot of their research was also published in 2008 which is very recent. I thought that this is a great article because there was a study done which proves the research which shows it is reliable.
My second source also had a study done with the article but this article was about women and eating disorders. Mentioned before because there is a study done with the research i can tell that i will be getting accurate information. This study and article were also done in 2008, which makes me reliable because it will be focused on women in the last couple years, not women from the 50′s.
My third source is about surgery and the media, which shows how the media is affecting a womans discussion to get plastic surgery. I found that with this source my author did more than one article about this type if situation which shows they are probably well-educated in this field, which helps me think that it will be very accurate. Another thing like my last two articles this was published in 2008, and also had a survey to help find out more information from real world people.

MLA: Modern Language Association
- First start off with a tentative thesis statement. Which will usually appear at the end of the introductory paragraph
- Organize your evidence, Bring out main ideas that the writer will use in their paper.
- Use sources to support your argument, using supporting evidence it can help orovide background information, can help with explaining terms or concepts, helps support your claims, leading authority to your argument and lastly using countering objections.
- 3 Main acts of plagiarism: failing to cite quotations, failing to enclose borroeded language in quotation marks, and failing to summarize in your own words.
- To use in-text citation you first need to source the authors name in the beginning of the paragraph, then at the end of the material cite the page number you found it on or a last name and lastly at the end of your paper make a works cited list (alphabetically) giving full publication info.
-Only use quotations when the language is vivid or expressive, exact working is needed or if language of a source is the topic discussion.
-MLA is used for most english instructors also some humanities instructors.
- When using long quotations, set them off from the text.
- Any source with an unknown author is cited by a shortened title.
-First line of each entry for works cited is at the left margin, extra lines are indented 1/2′ or 5 spaces.
-Double-spaced
Hacker, Diana. “MLA Papers”. A Writer’s Reference. Bedford/ St.Martin’s: 2009.
MLA internet Source:
-Do not right justify
- Set margins at 1 inch for top bottom and sides.
- The body of the paper should start below the title on the same page.
-Put page numbers in the upper right hand corner a 1/2 inch from the top and flush with right margin.
-Use your last name before the page number.
http://www.calstatela.edu/library/guides/3mla.pdf
All the information I gathered was very helpful because now I know how to do an MLA paper, I still feel like i need help getting all the information to cite my work but that will be easy once I start going and finding my articles. I now know that i need to put my name infront of the page number which i didn’t know before which is very helpful. I know that we need to cite our work because if not we would be stealing words that other people spoke, and that is plagerism and of course you can get kicked out of school for that. I know the importance of citing my work, i just dont understand why citing ever came about, i just dont understand what gives authors or whoever the right to there words, when they are just words. But that is how i always was so I know i will never understand that. I think

The first article titled “Critical reading towards Critical Writing,” Written by Deborah Knott, discussed how critical reading is vital for critical writing. This article stated the first couple judgments we make about a text is the first couple steps in formulating our own approach to the reading(Knott). It also mentioned that instead of asking yourself “how information can I get out of this?” ask “How is this information about my research?”(knott). By doing this it will help with picking which journals or articles to use and or read for your research. Instead of reading the article at first you can skim through it get the main ideas and see if any of those are on your writing. While critical reading you also want to look at which audience was this text made for?, how the text is organized, the evidence and supporting facts to all information given and also evaluation, do the arguments have strong enough information backing them up or is it more middle school writing than college? This article also gave some tips to better your critical reading skills, it states to highlight arguments that the author might make about a concept, so you can fully understand what the author is trying to get across.
The next article I read was titled, “Critical Skill 1: Strategic Deep Thinking,” written by Liz Strauss. This article was a little different because instead of talking about how to critically read it states how to critically think, Which I think is just as important specially with writing a research paper. This article gave tips for how to think deeper, some being, don’t use your first answer go beyond that and keep coming up with more answers(Strauss). Another tip being if you get stuck on a topic put it in the back of your mind and subconsciously think about it through the day and night, that way the next morning you should be able to come up with new ideas related to that topic(strauss). Another tip that I favored out of all of them was to discount the obvious and look at the invisible, meaning ask yourself “what am i missing” instead of what do i already have?, Than fill in the gap as you go along for what your paper is missing(struass).
The next article we had to read was “Writing for your Audience,” written by Linda Flower. In this Article the author mentions how people see things differently, to me a lake could be a sunny, warm fun place but to others it could mean fishing or even a scary place. Which is why the writer should know how the reader will picture what the writer is saying. The writer is meant to adapt to the readers view, instead of giving facts about a subject the writer should explain the facts but in his or her own way so that the reader can better understand what each statement is actually saying. Overall this article summarizes how the writer needs to teach the reader everything they need to know about the topic they are reading.
The second Article that I choose about writing for an audience is titled, “Writing for an Audience,” In this article is states similar advice to the first article I read. This article gave an example with a car accident and how you are going to explain what happen differently to your parents, friends and of course the car insurance company. It stated that knowing your audience helps with how you should arrange the information, and also with set the tone of your paper(Maryland). This article also mentioned to act as if your reader is less knowledgeable than the writer, so the writer can then better explain themselves in each argument or situation(Maryland). Lastly this article stated that the best way to efficiently plan your assignment is to figure out who your audience is, and what specific needs they might have.

What is your major research question or concern?
Right now my major research question is something along of the lines on how hard the industry of fashion is and why so many girls want to persue the fashion career. I want to know why so many girls at this school are taking up fashion for their major, like do they think it will be easy?, hard?, why are they doing it. I want to know this because the fashion industry is not an easy one to get into, yes it is big and there will always be jobs but most of those jobs that will be open are going to be low paying retail jobs and everyone that i heard talk say they are going to be a stylish or a designer and i just dont’ believe it. It is kinda hard for me to come up with a question now because i recently just switched my topic but my major concern is why are these girls doing this, do they really think it will be easy and do they really think they will make it. specially when most of theses girls are going out partying and not focusing on there studies because they think fashion is an easy major. I want to know that and I want to know once you do make it big and once you are making the money, is it worth it? Is your job stressful, are you happy you went into this field, or pissed that you spent money on an education and you hate your life now? Another thing wondering in my mind is how does the fashion world give back, designers make bank lots of bank and I never hear of a designer or a label really giving money back to the community. I work at gap and I know that gap gives back a lot of money each year they also like when their employees do community service, and help out in there community. Another thing that I have a concern about and was thinking about is how the celebrities influence our life so much, and maybe some girls think they will be able to hang out with the celebrities if they major in fashion. These are my concerns, if anyone can help me with making a question or even sort out my ideas a little better that would be GREAT
Why are you curious about this?
I think I am really curious about this topic because this is my major, and when I’m sitting in class i honestly see a lot of people that I think are going to fail, I dont believe in everyone that is in that major I feel like they are in there because they think it is cool. I also want to know about the designers and how they give back because in a couple years I plan on being a designer and helping out a lot of organizations with my talents and money. If you think about it this way if a design label makes a t-shirt a cool looking t-shirt devoted to a cause and sells it for 5 dollars giving all proceeds to the charity, they could cure a disease with all the money they would make, specially if you get a celebrity to wear it. I just believe that the fashion industry is so huge and makes so much money that it could change the world, and I’m curious to know why some designers haven’t helped out.
What led you to have an interest in this topic?
Actually I was going to research Domestic Violence then Marlen helped me out with changing my topic to how designers help out with charities, then I did the free writing and all of the above came to me. I am mostly interested in this topic because I am in this major, and when I tell someone that I’m in this major they look at me thinking what are you doing your going to fail? And for me I don’t see it that way because I don’t fail. On the other hand I can see where they are coming from because not every girl here at IUP that is in the Fashion program is going to do big things, I would say probably 10 percent of them will be working for high end fashion lines or become a buyer or designer for some label. I just want to learn more about this topic, maybe learning more about it will change my mind in even wanting to be in the fashion industry, I want to know anything and everything about this topic that is why it is so hard to even pin point a direction and make a research question.
5 Assumptions:
- I think that the fashion merchandising major is taken as a joke to many people, mostly boys at IUP.
Question: Why do most people put down the fashion major at IUP?, Why is the fashion major taken so lightly to some people?, Why do boys at IUP think the Fashion Merchandising major here is just an easy major girls take to say they are studying fashion?
- I don’t think that half of the girls in the fashion merchandising major are going to go anywhere with their career, I don’t think some people understand how hard this industry truly is to succeed in.
- I think that the fashion industry can be one of the most rewarding careers, and the fashion world could give back more than what they do already. specially with the money going into the fashion industry.
Questions: What type of charities is the fashion industry involved in, also what type of things do they help with?, How do designers pick the charity they want to help out with?, How is the fashion industry rewarding and how do they give back to society?
- I think that girls think it is cool to be in this major because they think that they will make it big, without having to do a lot of hard work. Even though there are a select amount of high paying jobs.
Questions: What are the statistics of finishing a fashion major and getting the job of their choice?, What type of things can you do to prepare yourself for the fashion industry?, Why do girls choose to study fashion and what type of jobs do they want to succeed in?, How truly hard is it to make it in the fashion industry, in a high paying position?
- I think that some of these girls also in the fashion merchandising major wouldn’t be able to handle the fashion industry, with all the pressure and stress that comes along with it.
Questions: How does stress and pressure affect people in the fashion industry?, What type of illnesses come along with the fashion industrys, because of the stress and pressure?, How strong do you have to be to work in the fashion industry?, What type of jobs in the fashion industry are the most stressful?, How do high paying workers now deal with the stress of the fashion industry?
How my Research is Different?: First of all I’m researching the fashion industry which already means I could have millions of topics, because the industry is so widely spread with tons of jobs. But instead of researching what the fashion industry does I will be researching be hide the scenes. My research will show how many fashion students actually graduate and find a job that they actually love, it will also show the stress be hide all the work that needs to be put into a store or a line to have it work out successfully. My research is going to be different from others that have been done because it will show what kind of hell the fashion industry is to work in, after this paper I want to know exactly what I’m getting myself into with this major.
My methodology:
For my specific research I would have to do almost everything possible to figure out everything i want to know. I would have to do interviews, hopefully with some type of designers or fashion houses. I’d also like to interview the fashion merchandiser of Old Navy since I am employeed there it will be easy for me to get a good interview with the employees of Old Navy. With these interviews I can show how hard and stressful the fashion industry can be. I would also interview students, a couple from each grade to show how the major will progressively get harder as you get older and more intense into the school work. I would also like to interview male students that believe the fashion major is a joke and ask them why they believe that, since the fashion industry is one of the biggest in the world. I would also do research online so I will be able to find all the jobs that are available in the fashion industry and how difficult they can be to do and advance in. Another thing I would like to do is a questionnaire, one asking what type of jobs each student would like to progress in, and how much money they expect to make, also how much stress and pressure they are able to handle. Another thing I could use for my research would be a fashion magazine and show statistics and or facts about the fashion industry.

soooo…… this project kinda sucks.. and i really am not sure what to do i want to do more about domestic violence because i can really relate to that but the whole how the fashion world helps out and igves back is really great too i just want to do good on this paper.. i really dont want to go to work!!!.. and i am really freakin hot in this damn room!!!.. i really want to write with the fashion world and how they help out because maybe i can find a good connection like a designer that has been abused or something related to my topic.. i really still want to be able to express myself and how i feel about domestic violence though.. but researching the fashion world will really help with my career and maybe i will be able to learn me about my career.. i dont know im freakin hot.. i want to eat something before i go to work.. im really sick too i just dont feel like free writing right now.. i dont even know what im thinking about … i just want to lay in bed and sleep withmy boyfriend im am exhausted and wont go to bed until 9 cause i work .. ughhh maybe i could do a topic on how stressful the fashion industry is and how exhausting and how much hard work goes into everything.. also how hard it is to make it in the fashion industry but how it is always in demand.. and why so many damn girls want to be fashion designers like do they really want to work in fashion or just think it will be easy.. because it won’t it is one of the hardest industrys.. well i mean working as a cashier isn’t that hard but who wanted to do that with there life.. b/c i always see my merchandizer for old navy and she is stressed out all the time goes outside for two cigs in a 15 minute break.. and maybe talk about after all the stress you deal with at work how rewarding it can be and how much money can be made and how after making it big you can maybe help out and donate money to less fortunate people.. i think i may have just changed my topic wow that was easy enough.. because i really do love the fashion world.

My website stated that there are two different types of genres of research writing, those being, argumentative and analytical.(Purdue) An argumentative paper being more of a persuasive paper, one were the writer is trying to get their point across so that they can change the reader’s mind about a topic. Because an argumentative is a persuasive paper you have to make sure that you pick a debatable topic, one where you don’t already know the answer or there isn’t already a set answer, so it will be easier for the writer to get their point across. (Purdue) An analytical paper on the other hand is more of an original research paper, one where you are asking a question about a topic and then using resources to answer that specific question.(Purdue) An analytical paper does not try to pursued the reader but instead it is an evaluation of a topic.(Purdue) After reading about these two topics I’ve realized that my research paper will be an analytical paper because I am researching domestic violence and also telling my story about it, I won’t be trying to persuade anyone into agreeing with me on any of my opinions.
The Purdue OWL. “Genre and the Research Paper.” Purdue U Writing Lab, 2008. Web. 27 Dec. 2008.
I know the homework says to narrow my topic down to two and then write about both of them, but I already have my topic so instead of two I’m going to tell you about the topic I will be doing. Stated in my last entry I am very passionate about domestic violence, which is why I have decided to research that topic. Because I want to learn more about domestic violence my genre type will be analytical, I am going to be evaluating the topic and researching statistics so I can fully understand everything. I want to research why there is domestic violence, why people choose to beat on other people and also the after effect the affect left on the mother or father and also the children. I really feel like I will be able to do this type of research better as an analytical paper then an argumentative paper because I am not trying to persuade anyone into thinking differently about domestic violence I am just trying to educate people about it. I want to be able to come away with something after writing this paper, and I hope who ever reads this paper will also have a better understanding and feel more educated on this topic.
Posted by: alwoodaysafgbq on: January 26, 2010
I’ve been able to narrow my topics down to one, one that I am very passionate about which is Domestic Violence. Instead of researching domestic violence though I am going to write a research paper more about how it affects the child of a parent that has been put through domestic violence. With this topic I want to learn more about how other children feel when they see, hear or told about their parent being put through domestic violence. I want to know how other children coped with their pain and how their parents reacted to their children’s reactions. I want to know all the feelings running through their heads and be able to compare them with what I went through. This topic is very important to me because I went through it and I want to see if other children reacted the same way I did or if maybe I over-reacted maybe even under-reacted. I want to be able to know I did the right thing with this whole situation. Another thing that is very important to me is to be able to write this paper and have it be so meaningful that it will help other children or parents going through the same situation. I believe I can bring something new to this paper because I have been through all this before and have first hand knowledge. I have yet to have the perfect research question but so far from what i have my research question is, How did domestic violence affect my life, my mothers and my family’s. With all this information a creative non-fiction, I think with this I will be able to explain my story better.

Instead of looking up the definition or research writing I found a website that more along the lines described research writing. Stating that research writing is a very essential part of an academic career, which I find true since we are all in research writing 202. I favored this website more than the others because it didn’t just state how research writing can be complicated and frustrating; instead it stated that research writing will be one of the more rewarding experiences students will meet during their academic career. I found that “research writing has many steps to it unlike other types of writings, with research writing you have the process of the research, critical thinking, source evaluation, organization and composition”(purdue). According to this website being a “research writer takes discipline and a great deal of practice along with a lot of patience.”(purdue) This website also stated how to pick a research questions with two scenarios, one being the teacher gives a list for the students to choose from and the other being what we have to do and that is picking your very own topic. Of course when the teacher gives a list it will help the student become more confident in their pick because they know their teacher already approves, unlike when a student has a million topics to choose from. One last thing I thought was really great about this article was that it said “you can brainstorm for your paper all day, you can see anything related to your topic in the real world, ask people questions and even browse the internet in between classes to help with writing your own research paper.” (purdue)
I really liked this statement I found on my webpage:
research paper as a living thing, which grows and changes as the student explores, interprets and evaulates sources to their specific topic.
http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/658/01/
The Purdue OWL. ” Writing a Research Paper.” Purdue U Writing Lab, 2008. Web. 27 Dec. 2008.
I believe research writing in a nut shell is hell. I also think that after researching your topic and finding out all new information it is very rewarding and during the process your learning so much on what topic that you become an expert on that topic. I also think that research writing is a very powerful tool to many students, it can help you learn and grow so much as a person without realizing your actually learning something, instead you just think your writing a paper. I also think that everyone is a research writer because whether you wrote a book report, a poem, a love note, short essay, really anything you write you have to research even if it’s about yourself. A book report you have to write about the book, research the book. If your writing a love note you have to know what that other person loves and how you feel about them, you may even have to research your anniversary incase you don’t remember. But a real true research writer to me is a writer that takes it to the next level to make their work stand out more than others. Lastly I believe research questions are developed through personal experience, something you want to learn more about, something you can devote hours to and never get bored and when you know what that thing is, then you have the perfect research question.
My research philosophy is simply to discover something more about and idea. I want to answer all the questions I ever had about a topic. I want to be able to write a paper and have someone with the same questions as me be able to read it and learn more than what they were hoping for. With that said I am going to approach this research project as if it was my career, and I will find out everything I need to know about my topic and learn more than I could hope for because if I didn’t then I would have wasted four months of my life looking up information on a topic that I could give two shits about.
